“FINDING THE BALANCE” THROUGH SONGS AND STORIES
Sierra Boggess brings her second solo cabaret to 54 Below
By Laura Furlipa

Gracefully taking the stage at Manhattan’s cabaret venue, 54 Below, from October 15-18, Broadway performer, Sierra Boggess enchanted audiences with her second solo show “Finding the Balance (The Journey of the Middle Child).” Boggess has the ability to naturally weave together Broadway, Disney, and classical tunes, while adding touches of her Britney Spears impression, making for a wonderful evening.  The Denver, Colorado native has made her mark on both the Broadway and West End stages, hailing from shows such as “Phantom of the Opera” (Christine Daae) and “Les Misérables.”  Boggess’ distinctive voice showcases the musical scale effortlessly.

Beginning her set accompanied by Brian Hertz on piano, Boggess humored the crowd by plucking out a few notes to some familiar tunes on the cello, before her sister, Summer Boggess took over to also accompany her.  Boggess reminisced throughout the night, telling stories in song which brought the audience on her journey, including performing in “Les Miz,” and making her Broadway debut in “The Little Mermaid.”

A fan-favorite moment occurred when Boggess momentarily changed character, gaining roars of laughter from the audience, by putting on an oversized costume jacket, borrowed from her former co-star, Norm Lewis, to become the “Les Miz” police inspector, Javert.  Boggess jokingly claimed that there was no better way to test out her audition for the role, than by singing the character’s ballad, “Stars,” at 54 Below.

Boggess never failed to mention life lessons and inspirations such as her Grandparents and Wayne Dyer.  In these, her emotional connections were displayed through her voice for the entirety of the night.  Just when you thought Boggess’ voice couldn’t get any better (or higher), she found a way to amaze the crowd by her choice of song.

In light of her cabaret title, Boggess balanced the solemn moments of her set with her hilarious personality, especially though her storytelling skills, singing “If They Could See Me Now,” while gushing about performing for the Queen of England at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s home in Sydmonton.

Whether one had been a fan of Boggess prior to the cabaret, upon leaving the venue, she left the audience with a more appreciative and inspirational outlook on life, love, and the gift of music.  Boggess returns to 54 Below for an encore of “Finding the Balance (The Journey of the Middle Child)” on November 6, 2014.
